Expectations: The Hunger Games

I finally decided to read the first book in The Hunger Games trilogy. Many people had recommended it to me over the past couple of years but I always had an excuse for not reading them. The Hunger Games, at least, was an entertaining read, even though I had issues with much of Suzanne Collins’ world-building – her easy prose and the strength of Katniss was enough to carry me through to the end; however, I am not so inclined to read the next two books.

That said, from the previews I’ve seen of The Hunger Games, the film adaptation looks as if it brings the best parts of the book to life, and Jennifer Lawrence the perfect choice to play Katniss. One of my issues with the book was that it sometimes read too much like I was watching movie; I’m hoping, however, that this pays off in the adaptation, especially since Collins co-wrote the screenplay. I expect some of the things that didn’t quite work for me in the novel will fare much better in the film.
