Expectations: John Carter

Admittedly, I was not expecting much out of John Carter. It was looking more like The Mummy or Van Helsing, movies overridden with special effects to the detriment of the story. However, the recent buzz on the movie from IGN has improved my outlook on it. Perhaps John Carter can be like Avatar, which did not have the greatest buzz until it was released.

I know little of the original story, only that it inspired many future sci-fi/fantasy stories such as Star Wars. That can bode ill for this movie if the story does not feel “original” despite it being the grand-daddy of many modern classics. I wish the film maker will be smart enough to introduce some new interesting elements to keep the story fresh.
